What is anxiety? Should I get help?


Some facts:

Most anxiety is normal, and is part of your body's natural reactions. However, when anxiety becomes excessive and starts to negatively impact your life, you may have an anxiety disorder and should seek help.


Anxiety is the most common mental health issue in Ireland and Europe, along with depression.


Approximately 1 in 9 people in Ireland will suffer from an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. 



Is all anxiety the same?

There are many different types of anxiety disorder, such as:

  • Phobias

  • Panic disorder

  • Social anxiety disorder

  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)

  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

What should I look out for?

Symptoms can vary, depending on the specific anxiety disorder, but there are some common symptoms include:

  • Intense fear, unease or worry

  • Breathlessness or trouble breathing

  • Palpitations

  • Excessive sweating

  • Dizziness

  • Disturbed sleep

  • Uncontrollable thoughts
